Fitness Recap: The Last One

11 Mar

Last week marked the last of my “just run when I feel like it” training. It was also a travel week back to see my family in Tennessee. I didn’t go out with a bang like I would have liked, but heading into my ultra training, I feel excited, scared, ready. The past few weeks, especially the week with my family have really taught me some lessons.

  • sometimes I can’t fit it all in and that’s okay
  • don’t beat myself up about the above statement, move on
  • I run because I like to not because I have to
  • I do like somewhat of a routine to my working out

Monday- Travel days are hectic: make sure clothes are clean, house is clean, I’m clean, my child is clean. Make sure work projects are settled. I made the easiest mistake to make on busy days: I didn’t fit it in first thing in the morning. I knew my day would pile up as time ticked on closer to our evening flight out and so no workout for me that day. Booo.

Tuesday- Checked out Clarksville Greenway. It was pouring rain so no one was out. It was really nice, actually. I only got in 5 miles because I was wimpy in the cold, windy rain. 5 miles in 37:29 (7:29 pace) for Laura’s 5 by the 5th.

Wednesday- I would’ve loved to have gone out for a nice long run followed it up with some yoga but the day had something else planned for me. Instead, with it being MY BIRTHDAY, I slept in (twist my arm), Mom took me shopping (oh, the horror) and treated me to lunch (oh, no she di’n't), and Noah wanted me to snuggle with him for his nap time (poor me). The evening was filled with smoked turkey, Nana’s lima beans (one of my favorites), roasted carrots (inspired by Laura), creamed corn and mashed potatoes. And Nana’s infamous tea cakes (from my Great-Grandmother MaMo’s recipe). Simply awesome.

Thursday- After overindulging in tea cakes, I headed out to Clarksville Greenway again. I got in 8.03 great miles in 59:46 minutes (7:26 pace) This felt awesome. I was burning off some energy for sure!

Friday- Ventured to Clarksville’s Rotary Park for some short miles but they will do. It was single track trail with some good little hills, creek crossing and rocks to navigate through. Good practice for me. 3.8 miles in 40 minutes (10:31 pace).

Mom’s BFF, Debbie came over and we all whooped it up that evening with a few bottles of wine. Well done, ladies!

Saturday- Went back to Clarksville’s Rotary Park for some more. Didn’t have a lot of time to work with so I did what I could. Just happy to be out there. My footing felt better out there and I was more confident in the downhills. 3.1 miles in 30 minutes (9:50 pace).

Sunday- Too much to fit in today before heading back to Denver.

This upcoming week starts my week 1 of ultra marathon training and I’m excited to share it with you! I will try to post it this week. What I like most is that I am incorporating all of the things that I love: running variety (long, speed, tempo, recovery), yoga, and strength. I’m also attempting to add a cycling workout once a week. I’m super focused on staying injury free and keeping a non-burnout training plan. That also means tightening up the diet a bit and really focusing my strength workouts! WOO-HOO!!

Wow, ultra training is here already? So exciting!! Glad you had a good time with family. I never get in all the workouts I want to when I’m there, either, but I’m okay with that. Awesome pace on your 8 miler- wow!! And sounds like you had an awesome birthday!

Every time I see your pace…I think dammit! So fast! It is good motivation for me though. As for Ultra Marathons…thinking about it makes me want to barf. You are insane.
