If you are around me for any period of time, you will quickly discover that I hate, absolutely hate the overuse and over-”glorification” of the word busy. Especially when people use it as an excuse or to impress. Hate. Want to push my buttons? There it is…along with little dogs dressed as humans, but I digress.
I get it. You’re busy. I’m busy. She’s busy. He’s busy. It’s not a contest. You win. You are the busiest person in the room. Gold star for you. I just don’t like when people use busy as an excuse for something or to show you how important their life is because they are soooo busy. Yuck. Too busy to workout? Nonsense. Get up earlier for your workouts. Go on your lunch break. Schedule a happy hour yoga class with a friend. Go for a walk around the park with your sister. Too busy to talk with friends or family? Nonsense. Call them when you can. Apologize for not getting back to them sooner. Prioritize. I’m not saying that I am not guilty of doing any of these things, because I am. I have many days when my day gets away from me and I don’t fit the things in that I wanted to but I never want to be the kind of person that is too busy to play with my son or too busy to talk to a friend.
For me, I personally don’t like feeling busy. I associate busy with rushing and not necessarily enjoying or savoring. It can eventually make me feel overwhelmed and under accomplished and who wants to feel that way? Not me. I want balance not busy.
Having these past few weeks off from training has made me really see that if I’m going to be busy, I want it to be fun busy. Or at least a little fun busy mixed in with busy-ness. So to rub it in to all of you and to show you just how busy I am here are some pictures of how I have been spending my lazy non-training days.
A trip to Phoenix to see my buddy, Melissa. She just moved into a new and fabulous place. There was some eating at fabulous places, wine drinking while unpacking, river floating, and friend snuggling. I miss the days of piling into a girlfriend’s bed or couch and watching Sex in the City or some super girly movie. It was a fun weekend. I managed to run in the August Phoenix heat, but barely.
I had some fun events at work. Rockies Ability Baseball Clinic – fun day marked by more fun on Friday night with the tickets they gave us. Woo-Hoo! Go Rockies! Then on Wednesday, we had a fundraiser that John Elway was the keynote speaker. Very cool! And to top that day off, I found my awesomely amazing co-worker a boyfriend. Meet Chad.
Jim’s sister and brother-in-law have been in town. Noah has been really cute with them and of course loves all the attention. I like the extra help, the non-profit chatter from Laura, and the financial advice from Steve. I think they had a good time hiking, running and just enjoying Colorado.
I bailed on the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon this past weekend for a couple of reasons: late night at the Rockies game Friday night coupled with the ever present ache in my hamstring. I said nope, it’s not worth it. Especially because I will be pacing a friend at his first Leadville 100 Miler this coming weekend. I will be one of several pacers, but I will be pacing him late in his race taking him in to finish under the cut-off time of 30 hours so I absolutely want to make sure that my hamstring cooperates with me. This week I will also be stepping into a new training plan so stay tuned for that on Wednesday. It’s a little different than what I have been doing so that will be fun!
So tell me, what has been your fun busy lately?
