Friday Favorites

3 May

This will be the phone photo dump version of my Friday Favorites. On the workout front, things are looking good. I’ve hit my goals so far for the week so that’s something. I’m heading out on Sunday for a 22-24 miler depending on the trails. Jim and I are hoping to get outside with Noah and work on the yard: pulling weeds, turning over the garden (still scared to plant because of possible snow, maybe one more week). Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will have a gorgeous Spring weekend.

But here is a look at some of the things I was loving this week.

  • Cheesy grins from this little guy!

  • Mid run stops for a little Yoga.

  • Post run celebratory beer! Imperial Java Stout.

  • When Noah picks out his own clothes and dresses himself.

  • A beautiful Colorado day!

  • My 2 year olds photography skills! Yep, Noah was riding his push trike (read: I was pushing him) and wanted to take pictures with my phone so I let him. None of the others are even recognizable but this one turned out pretty cool.

  • Snuggle time with Stella and Noah. We lay on our sleeping bags and watch “Over the Hedge” or Thomas the Train. Noah will hold my hand or he will stroke my hair. Love it!

  • Daily Yoga practice at home. I love a good Yoga class and I do find it hard to push myself as hard at home as I do during a class but I can really see improvements in my practice, and that’s always fun.

  • Yoga Challenges on Instagram. I don’t post my pictures every day like the others but I do work on the poses each day. Some people are so creative with their pictures and I use it as motivation and maybe a little direction for what I will be working on that day. I also like to check out #crowplaces and #springbalancearmy for other motivation. You can find me at fitnesskel HERE.

  • A good group of girlfriends. Although I don’t have a picture to capture this Favorite, I feel really grateful for the ladies in my life. I have some pretty incredible friends! I am starting to pursue some cool things and I have an amazing network of people to draw from for encouragement, suggestions, a critical eye, a bottle of wine, a long run, a good run, a crappy run, or just to meet up for dinner and drinks. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such cool chicks!

Hope you all have an awesome weekend! And tell me, what’s a favorite thing of yours from this week?

T-T-Tennessee

14 Mar

I don’t know about you but the time change is kicking my butt. Don’t get me wrong, I love, love, love that it is still light out past 5:00pm, but I’m still having a hard time rolling out of bed in the morning. Anyhoo…

Last week we spent with my family in Clarksville, Tennessee. It is about 30 miles northwest of Nashville on the border of Kentucky. And no, we didn’t take the Last Train to Clarksville and yes, it is that Clarksville. The week was jammed packed with family activities. I wasn’t as great this trip about taking pictures (sorry Mom, sorry Nana), but I did manage to get a few cute ones.

Noah loves him some Pa. My step-dad had two shadows that week: his dog Libby and Noah. I don’t think he minded one bit.

Getting ready to feed the chickens

Noah’s new thing that he thinks is so silly is that he adds the word “cheese” after everything. So, we get a lot of Mommy-Cheese, Pa-Cheese, Daddy-Cheese, Mo-Cheese. It’s silly I know, but he thinks it’s hilarious. Here they are doing Noah-Cheese and Pa-Cheese back and forth to each other.

Pa-Cheese

Noah and his Mo got to read lots of books together and he was able to show her how much of a genius he is. They also colored some Easter eggs which Noah was into a lot more than I thought he would be. He liked choosing which color to dye the eggs and then rolling the egg around in the bowl with the spoon. He was concentrating so hard.

I don’t have a picture of it and man, I wish I did, but Friday evening my sister Katie was the entertainment. She decided to show all of us her dance that she performed back in December (she takes dance at a friend’s studio). Noah was mesmerized and Katie tried to show him some dance moves – the cutest thing ever!!!

Libby made sure to get her snuggle time in with Noah too. They have a love/hate relationship for sure. But Libby is really sweet with him.

Cuddle time with Libby dog!

My Nana and Pa got to hang out with Noah for a while too offering to babysit for me for a couple of hours. We got a quick visit in with Aunt Vickie. The other cool thing was meeting up with my cousin who I haven’t seen since we were teenagers. We met each other’s spouses and let the kids meet and play! So, so cool!

Cousins!

Back to the grind this week! It is a whopper of a week, but come Friday I should have a pretty easy work schedule for a while. Thank goodness!

When you go home for a visit, do you tend to do the same stuff or always try to change it up? I tend to do the same thing each time I’m home, but I was just thinking how it might be fun next time to see the city like a tourist.

While Dad’s Away

A day in the life of me and Noah while the hubs is away.

Early morning snuggles in bed. Don’t judge the bags under the eyes; I think he woke up at like 4am that morning.

Nothing like a little hike to wear out the little man and Stella dog, too. He told me he was “climbing an elephant”.

Puzzles, games, books, eat, ride bikes, drink milk, run around like a crazy man, and REPEAT!

I still managed to get some good workouts in this week with the help from babysitters, jog strollers, nap times, and fitness center childcare. Plus, Noah enjoys doing “Yoga with Mom” as he says. Big Fun!

What do you do to make sure to fit in your workouts on a tight schedule?

My Year in Numbers

31 Dec

I was trying to think of just one word to sum up my 2012 and I couldn’t. But three words came to mind: Progress, Dedication, and Flexibility. This isn’t just about my running. It seems in most aspects of my 2012, these words exemplify the type of year I had.

I saw Progress in my running. Shiny new PRs, a Boston Qualifying time, a big jump in my endurance base. I’m stronger and I like it. With Yoga I saw lots of progress as well. The main thing of being totally present for that 60 minutes and not allowing any outside thoughts influence what I am focused on while on my mat. Progress in this game of life – I paid off my student loans, got a new job and was able to find a good balance between home, work and exercise. I like forward movement. Progress.

It takes Dedication and some planning to train for multiple big races throughout the year with a full time job, life commitments, and a toddler running all over. I run in all types of weather (just to avoid a treadmill) but I did have to tough it out on the treadmill every now and again. It also takes a lot of dedication and consistency to parent a toddler. It’s frustrating and sometimes you want to give in (and sometimes do) but as parents we are dedicated to raising a social, active, loving, thoughtful and smart boy and do what we can to instill good values in him by our words and our actions.

It was mid year and I was training for my 2nd marathon of the year and I think a little burned out when Jim said to me “It’s like you don’t even like running anymore. You always seem frustrated before and after your workout. Maybe your training is too rigid.” This was a HUGE ah-ha moment for me. I immediately realized that for me in this moment, I needed Flexibility in my training more than that strict I-Have-To-Do-A-Speed Workout-On-Tuesday mentality. It made a tremendous effect on my running and in every other aspect of my life. I realized that somedays I will have dishes in my sink all day (sorry, Mom), the bed might not get made everyday, and poor Stella might not get as many cuddles and walks as she once did, but I have one happy kid who loves playing with his momma with toys strewn all over. I have a kid who knows that I will stop cleaning the moment he asks me to read him a book. Flexibility.

So now for the numbers.

  • Miles I ran: 1,300.57 miles
  • Months my mileage was over 100: 6
  • Monthly Mileage at my peak training (in September): 170
  • candles on my cake: 35
  • current number of running shoes (not counting the ones I retired): 8
  • my plank hold PR (personal record): 3:00 minutes
  • number of marathons: 2 – One very spectacular one
  • number of half marathons: 3 One PR producing one
  • Relays I rocked: 1 EPIC one.
  • 5ks I ran: 1
  • 10Ks I ran: 1
  • States I ran in: 6
  • Countries I visited: 2 (Jamaica and Canada)

Here are some of my favorite things from 2012. Some running related. Some not.

Favorite Activity with Noah  Hiking. I want him to grow up loving being outside as much as I do. I want him to see his momma strong and active being a good role model for living a fun and healthy lifestyle.

Sewing. I’ve made 4 purses, 2 clutches, 2 lap top bags, 5 throw pillows, too many scarves to count, toddler pants, a super hero cape, and a quiet book- biggest accomplishment. I enjoy it a lot.

Favorite New Haircut I normally chop all my hair off every 3-4 years and donate it to Locks of Love or Wigs for Kids. I have done this 4 times now. But at the start of 2012, I wasn’t ready to cut my hair, but I did want a change. So Bangs it was.

Favorite Running Shoes Brooks Ghost for my long distances and Mizuno Wave Riders for my shorter runs.

Favorite Picture from this Year Me and Noah on the beach in Charleston, SC.

Best Race of the Year (and Favorite) Detroit Marathon in October. Not only did I smash my PR, I qualified for the Boston Marathon. I ran a smart, confident race. And I got to do it with a group of amazing ladies and runners.

Second Favorite Race The EPIC Relays. It’s such a wonderfully insane experience to do with a group of girls you absolutely adore. You are a tired, smelly, achy, sleepy, stinky bunch but it is awesome!

New Job.  I stayed at home with Noah for the first 15 months and then was offered a great new gig with the National Sports Center for the Disabled. So happy with my decision.

Favorite Trail Run Green Mountain Trail with Nina Machina. It was an awesome day out!

Green Mountain trail run was incredible. Why have I not done this route before??

Green Mountain trail run was incredible. Why have I not done this route before??

Unlike, most of the runners I know, I don’t have my 2013 race calendar planned out yet (gasp). But here are a few goals I have in store for myself this year.

  1. Stay injury free. I truly believe that it was adding in the cross training to my weekly workouts that helped keep me from getting hurt. It also helped beat the boredom factor for me. So, I will continue my spin class, strength training and plenty of yoga in 2013.
  2. Improve my speed. I would much rather be slightly uncomfortable for 26.2 miles than be really uncomfortable for 3.1. I don’t feel my current PRs in my 5K and 10K reflect my true ability. I want to see many more 6:xx on my runs rather than 7:xx. So I plan to work on that at the start of the new year.
  3. Complete an ultramarathon. Whether it is a 50K or 50 Miler, I know this will be my next BIG challenge. Any suggestions or takers????
  4. Be a part of an ultra team for an endurance race. These races are all over Colorado. We will most likely do the EPIC Relays again. I am a part of an all girl relay team (we’ve done races together for the past 5 years), but some of us are itching to take it up a notch this year. That’s 5 girls running 200 miles. Eeeek!!!

So, there you have it, folks. Happy New Year!

A Tennessee (almost) Christmas

27 Dec

We got back from our 2 week trip visiting our families in Tennessee and North Carolina just in time for a Colorado Christmas. Our first week in Tennessee resulted in a first for me: no exercise for a week. I managed alright but won’t be making a habit of it. My family tried hard to make it seem like Christmas for us during our visit (2 weeks before Christmas Day).

Christmas tree

  • The house was beautifully decorated and smelled like Christmas.
  • Mom made Noah a felt Christmas tree for him to place ornaments on – very cute!
  • Last minute shopping with Mom in downtown Clarksville to support our local businesses.
  • Going to see the Christmas on the Cumberland (River). Lots of lights and music and people out with their families. Sure to put you in the Christmas spirit!
  • My Nana slaved away in the kitchen making her traditional Christmas dinner and desserts. All of which she would be making again 2 weeks later for the rest of the family’s actual Christmas.  BEST. FOOD. EVER.

Noah had a big time: feeding the chickens, collecting the eggs, riding the tractor, moving some hay, talking to the cows, running from Libby (the dog). He also got some snuggle time in with his Mo while they read books. Clarksville Museum had a train exhibition going on so we made sure to go to that and see the amazing miniature trains – plus the adult kids got to check out the bubble room ;-)

Noah got to see his Uncle Matt, which he sometimes calls “Muncle Att”. We also met his adorable girlfriend, Emily who Noah now loves because she fed him all his favorite food!

this picture should teach me that "no makeup" is not a great look for me unless I'm in workout gear.

Looking forward to going back soon. Yay!! I didn’t get to meet up with any friends or trail exploring so next time I go I will have to make up for that. Plus, I was really looking forward to running THIS again. Who doesn’t love a good bridge crossing?

For those who would like to see more pictures, HERE is the link to those photos. Then simply click on the Slideshow button and enjoy.

On a crafty note: I finished my quiet book and it looks awesome. I have already started on another for family and have taken 2 orders, although I still don’t know what I should charge. This mom told me she would pay anything- okay then One Million dollars, ah ah ah <insert evil maniacal laugh>. I will post some pictures soon, but next up – A Carolina (almost) Christmas.

Ornaments, Santa Snubbing and Ugly Sweaters

7 Dec

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around these parts. Even though we are heading out this Sunday for a 2 week trip to see both families (in Tennessee and North Carolina), we still wanted the house to feel festive. Plus, we will be getting back to our home just in time for Santa!!

Christmas tree

Noah was quite the helper with the tree and it was fun with him wanting to be a part of it. We have quite the assortment of ornaments in one spot, but that’s okay, he really enjoyed decorating the tree. He was so proud every time he hung an ornament. Every ornament was placed and replaced with much thought and effort.

toddler hanging ornament

Majority of the ornaments on our tree are our old ornaments from our childhood. Growing up, I got an ornament every year with my name on it or the year. I do the same for me and Jim and now Noah. Here are a few of our special ornaments.

This was my first Christmas ornament that says "Baby's First Christmas" and the year ;-)

toddler starting at the christmas treeUnfortunately, what won’t be happening this year is a picture with Santa Claus. We tried, but Noah just wasn’t going to have it. There was a line behind us and sweet Santa did try but Noah just wanted to admire Santa from afar. Oh well. I’m going to attempt to take some pictures this weekend and see what happens. Any cute photo ideas?

Speaking of things not happening, my exercising has not been happening. I think I have run once this week. But I’m trying not to beat myself up over it too much because I have been getting other stuff done: My Quiet Book!! I’m so excited about it. All my pages (10 so far) are complete and sewn together. Now, I just need to make the outside cover and this baby is complete! Just in time for our plane rides.

Saturday morning, Jim, Noah and I will be wearing our Ugly Christmas Sweater finest and heading out to Denver’s Ugly Sweater Run. No race goals for me, just fun with the fam!

Denver’s Parade of Lights, kind of

5 Dec

Parades are fun. Parades at night with lights are even better. Know what’s not better? Not being able to see anything. Denver’s annual Parade of Lights was extra crowded this year due to our unusual high temps and earlier start time (on Saturday it starts at 6:00pm unlike Friday’s 8:00pm and our temps are still in the high 60′s).

We still had a good time but learned a few lessons along the way.

1) Set up camp early. Our plan was to view the parade from the parking deck of our neighbor’s work (Curtis and 15th) but since we got there so so late because of all the traffic, police wouldn’t let us cross the parade route. Fail. Next time, we will get there super early to avoid traffic, go to dinner then casually walk over to our prime location.

2) Do not park in a parking garage. It may seem like a good idea at the time, but when everyone wants to leave at the same time, you will wait for a long time to get out. Case and point. Our neighbors got right in the car after the parade ended (7:30pm) and got home at 9:45. Me, Jim, and Noah walked around for a while looking for a place to eat and ended up at Delaney’s Irish Pub (yes, we brought our baby to a bar). We got home at 10:15pm and didn’t have to endure the crowds. Plus, Noah had a big ol’ time giving the rowdy Irish guys “knucks”. My co-worker told me that one time her kids watched an entire movie while sitting in parade traffic. Ugh.

3) Bring cash for frivolous spending. Normally, Jim and I aren’t big on paying $10 for a foam finger at a football game (beer, yes foam finger, no), but when all the other kids have glow sticks and your child wants a glow stick too, it is perfectly acceptable for your child to get a lighted thinga-ma-jiggy to keep him happy. It’s just smart parenting, people.

Here are a few pictures from our adventure. Our shoulder swapping, lightsaber swinging, pub crawling, traffic stalling, naughty-word learning adventure.

Ooh, pretty lights or "yights" as Noah calls them

Ooh, pretty lights or “yights” as Noah calls them

As you can see, Noah was way more interested in what was right next to him than trying to see the actual parade - plus he was on my shoulders - what could the kid actually see?

5 Days of Workouts Isn’t Too Bad

3 Dec

I’m coming off a really nice weekend spent running, parading and eating with good friends. I had some good runs this week so I’m pleased about that. I’m not doing great with the strength training component so I will continue to work that in when I can.

Monday- 4 miles in 34:56 (8:43 pace). This was a tough run for me. Nothing was really falling into place. It was one of those workouts you just have to shake off. Plus, this little munchkin wanted a hug when I got home. That makes it all better.

toddler boy in santa hat

Tuesday- 10 minutes on the step mill and 20 minutes on the elliptical followed by a Yoga Sculpt class. Just what I needed.

toddler boy

Thursday- 6.03 miles in 46:49 (7:45 pace). This was a lunch time run in the crazy high 60 degree weather Colorado has been having. I went to a late evening C2 Yoga class at Core Power Yoga. I worked on handstands for a solid minute. I was sore on Friday.

Saturday- When Noah sleeps in until 8:00am we all sleep in until 8:00am and it was wonderful!! We did a little shopping and got Noah a haircut that once again took 3 hairstylists and a lot of tears. Jim and Noah headed to the gym and I took off for a long run from the gym to our house. It’s normally just 4 miles from the gym to our house so I had to be creative with our trail system to make it a long run. I managed 9.11 miles in 1:16:57 (8:26 pace) and was happy with that.

That evening we went with our neighbors to see Denver’s Parade of Lights downtown and experienced the ridiculous traffic that goes along with that. We probably won’t ever do it again, taught our children not-so-nice words, but we all had a good time, none the less. For a later post.

toddler with his daddy

Sunday- I met up with fellow Team New Skin teammates for the Rocky Mountain Road Runners monthly run at Wash Park. 4.65 miles in 34:29 (7:24 pace). I was told that I left 2 minutes before they called my name as a raffle winner, dang it!!!

New Skin

Had full intensions of going to Hot Fusion Yoga class at 7:30 that evening, but dinner with our neighbors ran long and wine was flowing freely, so…

This upcoming week looks like a good one as we prepare for our 2 week trip back to Tennessee and North Carolina for our Christmases with our families. We will make it back to Colorado just in time for Santa to put the gifts underneath our Colorado tree. Here is my fitness plan for the week. My meal plan will consist of a fridge dump. Whatever will expire will go in a skillet, a crock pot, or the oven at some point this week.

Monday- 3-5 miles easy plus yoga.

Tuesday- Spin class plus weights

Wednesday- 4-6 miles

Thursday- 10 miles plus weights

Friday- Spin class plus Yoga

Saturday- Ugly Sweater 5K Run in Denver

Sunday- travel day

Do you have any Ugly Sweater Runs in your future??

My little man will be turning 2 soon. He is such a fun, inquisitive, active little boy who loves playing with trucks, giving cuddles to his bunny, and sitting in his chair reading his books.

Here are some of my favorite pictures that really capture his playful personality. I will spare you all the crying pictures of him, although they are pretty funny. And yes, I totally take pictures of him during a crying fit and have actually videoed a temper tantrum. Judge all you want.

First thing in the morning, after he tells us what he wants to eat: applesauce, oatmeal, and yogurt, he usually wants to go “OUTSIDE!!!!”

He makes me feel like I’m the funniest person ever! “Momma silly. Dada silly.”

He likes what he likes. He dressed himself on this day. Picked out his “Geen Eggs n Ham sirt”, “Red shoos, mama.” And we were on day 3 of the hat on his head. He even wore it to bed. Hey, we pick our battles around here.
